Join us as a Home-Visiting Volunteer

Do you have a few hours spare each week?
Our Home-Visiting Volunteers support young families in their homes on a weekly basis.

Do you have parenting knowledge and experience?

Could you offer friendship and support to a family in Guildford?

Visits might include holding the baby while mum has a shower, playing with twin toddlers while mum has a sleep, taking parents shopping and showing them how to budget, being a listening ear to relieve isolation, modelling positive childcare and play.

Our friendly, 6 week Autumn volunteer preparation course starts on Wednesday 16th October in Burpham.

Training sessions cover all aspects of family support so volunteers can help parents give their children the best start in life.

A quick guide to becoming a Home-Start visiting volunteer

  • You must be a parent or have parenting experience
  • As a Home-Start volunteer you will support a family by visiting them at home for around two to three hours once a week
  • You should be able to commit at least one year of your time to Home-Start
  • You should have a non-judgmental attitude and understand about the pressures of bringing up a family.
  • You will have to attend our free Volunteer Preparation Course with other new volunteers before meeting your first family.
  • When visiting a family travel expenses are paid
  • You must understand that your support for families is completely confidential
  • You will have to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check at enhanced level
  • You will meet regularly with, and be supported by, one of our Co-ordinators during the time you are visiting families.

Interested in other volunteer opportunities?

We are also looking for volunteers who can plan and run a weekly group alongside one of the Home-Start team, prepare snacks or help out at a creche allowing parents to attend a short course (10 weeks maximum).

Are you a good organiser?

Would you be happy to organise one or more of our family events?  And, there are always plenty of admin tasks!

Please get in touch if you are interested in any of these roles.  Most of the roles will require a DBS check to be carried out and everyone will be invited to the Prep Course where you look at lots of useful and interesting topics and get to meet other volunteers over six sessions.

Our next Prep Course starts on 16th October and runs for 6 Wednesdays, finishing on 27th November, but you can sign up now.
